Simplify proxy voting in your elections with Kuorum

Many organizations include in their bylaws the possibility of delegating voting rights to another member or a third party. This delegation may be without voting instructions, when the person delegating trusts the judgment of their delegate when voting, or with voting instructions, when the person delegating wants to mark the vote for some or all of the questions on the ballot.

Frequently asked questions about proxy voting

What is proxy voting?

Proxy voting is a feature that allows a voter to transfer their right to vote in an assembly or collective decision-making process to another person or representative. This means that if someone is unable to participate directly in the vote, they can delegate that right to another member to vote on their behalf.

Proxy voting can also be used as an expression of trust in a representative. In these cases, the person delegating their vote may or may not attend the event, but their right is exercised by a third party to whom they have ceded the responsibility for making the decision.

How does proxy voting work in Kuorum?

At Kuorum, proxy voting can be managed in two ways:

  • Proxy with voting instructions: the person granting the proxy may indicate how they want to vote on one or more specific items on the agenda.
  • Proxy without voting instructions: the person granting the proxy trusts the proxy holder to vote according to their own judgment.

The platform allows this process to be managed easily, whether administrators enter proxies manually or enable a period during which voters themselves delegate their votes digitally.

Who can delegate their vote and to whom?

Generally, any eligible voter may delegate their vote provided that the organization's bylaws or internal rules allow it. The vote may be delegated to another member or to a designated third party, depending on the specific rules of each entity.

What are the advantages of managing proxy voting with Kuorum?

Using Kuorum for vote delegation offers several advantages:

  • Efficient digital management: allows delegations to be clearly recorded on the platform.
  • Flexibility: Voters can delegate from anywhere during the designated period.
  • Centralized control: on the day of the meeting, the representative can cast all votes (their own and those of delegates) from a single screen without repeating the identification process.

Is proxy voting compatible with other types of voting?

Yes. Proxy voting can be integrated with other Kuorum voting mechanisms, such as real-time or deferred voting, and with automatic quorum and results management systems.

What prerequisites are needed to use proxy voting?

To enable proxy voting, the following is required:

  • The entity's regulations allow it: before enabling the feature in Kuorum, it is necessary to confirm that the internal regulations, statutes, or applicable laws accept proxy voting for the type of meeting or decision to be held.
  • The vote was configured with delegation enabled: in Kuorum, administrators can activate the delegated voting option when creating or preparing the vote, defining whether delegation is accepted and under what conditions (for example, with or without voting instructions).
  • The proxy period is open: the platform can define a time window in which participants can register their proxy before the general vote.
  • The voter meets the requirements for participation: only those who have confirmed voting rights in the assembly or process may delegate their vote.

Is proxy voting legal?

Legal validity depends on the delegation procedure complying with the organization's internal rules and applicable legislation. Kuorum facilitates the clear and audited recording and monitoring of these delegations, which helps to comply with legal and statutory requirements.

Can votes be delegated in union elections?

No, in elections for company staff representatives, voting must be personal, free, direct, and secret. This feature does not apply to this type of election.
