The challenge: a sports contest

The New Hampshire Soccer Coaches Association (NHSCA) annually holds a contest to select the best players from youth leagues. Members vote for the best forward, defender and midfielder in both the boys' and girls' categories. The voting proess is simple, as legal validity is not a requirement.

However, the voting method is complex: voters assign two points to their top two selections and one point to the runners-up in each category.

In previous editions the client used Google's online forms (Google Forms) but it was difficult to ensure there were no duplicate votes. They also spent many hours reconciling the vote counts.

The solution: ranking answers and magic linking

At Kuorum, we have been helping organizations of all kinds with their voting since 2013. Therefore, our solution has a wide diversity of question types. On this occasion, it was decided to use ranking questions, allowing voters to to set a preference order for their choices. This enabled the client to assign points to each candidate according to the contest rules.

As mentioned, in this case it was not essential to have a secure identification system. The main goal was simply to prevent duplicate votes. To achieve this, a list of voters’ email addresses was created, and invitations were sent using Kuorum’s mass email system. Each invitation included a magic link (or token)— a personalized, single-use link that uniquely identifies the person who clicks it.

Indetifying new functionalities

At Kuorum, we don’t believe in the concept of a “small client.” We strive to meet the needs of all our users, regardless of the size of the contract. In the case of the NHSCA, we encountered a unique situation that is less common in assemblies and elections for other types of organizations. Each voting question had dozens of candidates, making the form creation process quite tedious.

Our development strategy is based on agile methodologies such as Scrum and is user-focused. We frequently release new features to production to meet our users’ expectations. To make the organizers’ work easier for this contest, we developed a new feature that allows questions and answer options to be uploaded in bulk. It is now available to all our customers.
